MEET ANUBHA SHARMA
By Zeba Akhtar
An Economics graduate, and a successful professional, she has commanded considerable amount of success in high level financial positions in firms such as Kotak Securities, Edelweiss, and Reliance Money.
However, for Anubha Sharma, this was never enough.
After a 20 yearlong career, she still craved for more, and found this in her venture; Angel Xpress foundation.
What stands today as a successful and renowned foundation for the underprivileged, was born out of pure impulse and the desire to make a difference.
Struck by the belief that intervention could be fruitful in changing destinies, Anubha always had a dormant desire to move towards the path of intervention but did not know how or when. It was when she went out with a friend who had taken 35 odd under privileged children to McDonald’s for a treat, that this dormant desire took an active form and Angel Xpress came about.
Initially it was restricted to just a few activities and gatherings for donation of clothes etc. that usually was mobilized via Facebook updates and statuses, but gradually it took concrete form.
Today, Angel Xpress runs numerous programs, each one directed at a specific issue, following a specially carved out path.
“Angel Xpress is built around a vision to provide keen donors and volunteers with an authentic platform to directly extend their philanthropic support to the society; thereby bridging the gap between the donors and the deprived,” says Anubha who used her experience and finances to set it up.
Angel Xpress claims to bridge the gap of quality education by bringing in committed and dedicated adults who will pledge to help kids from underprivileged backgrounds with their academics, not only as teachers, but also as able guides and mentors for life.
With this in mind, the foundation currently runs two main programs. AFX learning centers are core programs aimed at bringing in mentors to help children from these backgrounds with schoolwork. It currently has around seven centers in shaded corners of major parks. The second program is called the In-School English program, which stations AFX sponsored teachers in vernacular medium schools so that children in such schools are not deprived when it comes to learning the English language.
Volunteers from all walks of life come in to become mentors. Some are ex teachers, some are currently in college, while others are young mothers who see the value of quality education and hence would like to extend their learning further.
Anubha embarked on this new journey together with one of the callers, a businessperson called Beenaa Advani, who also decided to abandon her commercial pursuits for this cause. “It’s the love I get from the children every time I walk into a center that keeps me going,” says Co-Founder Beenaa.
In running AXF, besides a small team of employees, Anubha and Beenaa are supported by a core group of volunteers who have taken on the responsibility of furthering the cause in numerous ways. From managing centers, taking charge of generating curriculum & assessment papers, managing volunteer relationships, to fund raising, to helping with creative content and website management, many tasks at AXF are performed by dedicated volunteers. Support from communities like the Bandra bandstand Resident’s trust has been key to the success of the Angel Xpress Philosophy
AXF now seeks to provide an opportunity to schoolchildren from the more privileged backgrounds to become “buddies” of their less privileged peers. The seventh AXF center has been hosted by Billabong Malad as an opportunity for the parents as well as senior students to give back to the community.
Impacting more than 2000 children alone, Anubha and Beena have proven that the pursuit for spreading education is a real issue, which needs to be addressed promptly and with as much zeal as we use for our other passions in life!
